Refurbishment of Student Union
Location: Kings College, London
Scope of project
Alpine Works was contracted to refurbish the existing Student Union facilities at Kings College London. The project was a design and build instruction where we worked in close partnership with the Architects and Student Union. The scope of the project involved identifying the existing services and modifying to encompass the new design. The areas of improvement included a bar and an adjacent nightclub, new kitchens and breakout area for students to relax in. A lighting design was proposed where the requirement for isolated and mood settings was essential and needed to be connected to an existing network for monitoring purposes.
The main challenge was the LED lighting which was optimised with intelligent controls through a Dali System which required connectivity through an existing network. We used scene setting with both presence and absence controls with daylight dimming to achieve the required light levels and mood settings. LED lighting was installed which included emergency fittings. The emergency fittings were part of the intelligent lighting control system which was linked to the existing network. Throughout the project, the lighting manufacturer was instrumental in helping us achieve a highly successful outcome with all parties prior to handover.
