UCL 25 Gordon Street

Summary of works: 

25 Gordon Street is home to UCL Students’ Union, the oldest students’ union in England as well as offices, some teaching facilities and a cafe on the ground floor. Working as principal contractor Alpine Works were commissioned to replace the complete mains distribution infrastructure including LV metering to allow remote monitoring of supplies to all areas of the building; The works also consisted of all builder’s works, fire stopping, asbestos management and removal works;

The project was particularly challenging as the services had to be maintained at all times as the building was occupied and all shutdowns and works were undertaken so as to minimise any disruption to the usual day-to-day operation of the building.

 

UCL Roberts Building Materials Hub

Location:  UCL Roberts Building Materials Hub

Project value: c.£700,000

Summary of work:   

Alpine Works carried out provided the full design and installation for the electrical refurbishment of existing areas of the building across multiple floors (lower basement, upper basement, ground floor, first floor, second floor) – including laboratory spaces, teaching facilities and roof area mechanical plant; while maintaining all services to the building that remained in occupation at all times.

The electrical installation consisted of new general small power supplies, lighting installation including controls systems, addressable emergency lighting system, structured IT wiring, fire alarm systems, mains distribution alterations and additions, main mechanical plant supplies and control panels, alterations and additions to the ground floor MBE suite UPS systems, installation of additional dedicated stepdown transformers for specialist kit and specialist

UCL Centre for Languages - 26 Bedford Way

Location: UCL Centre for Languages and International Education – 26, Bedford Way

Project value:  c.£650,000

Summary of works:

Working as principal contractor, Alpine Works was engaged to replace the main LV switch gear; including new main 2000A switchboards and voltage optimiser units, new sub-main cable supplies to new distribution boards and items of plant throughout the building; A new 2000A remote generator connection unit was provided along with new rising busbars and metering network installation, earthing and bonding to electrical and mechanical services and new lighting and small power to the switch rooms was also installed. The works also consisted of all builder’s works, fire stopping, asbestos management and removal works;

The existing services had to be maintained at all times as the building was occupied and all shutdowns and works were undertaken so as to minimise any disruption to the usual day-to-day operation of the building.

UCL Insitute of Archaeology 31-34 Gordon Square

 

Location:  UCL Institute of Archaeology, 31-34 Gordon Square

Project value: £410,000

Summary of work:   

Working as principal contractor, Alpine Works was responsible for the partial replacement of the Mains Electrical Distribution System and LV metering at the Institute of Archaeology, a 6 storey building. This project was a health and safety hot spot due to the discovery of asbestos which had to be managed and removed as part of the contract.

The existing services had to be maintained at all times as the building was occupied and all shutdowns and works were undertaken so as to minimise any disruption to the usual day-to-day operation of the building

UCL Physics Building Gower Street

Location:  UCL Physics Building, Gower Street

Project value: £350,000

Summary of work:   

The project consisted of the part replacement of the Physics Building mains distribution infrastructure to all areas of the building while maintaining all services. The electrical installation consisted of alterations to the existing main switchboards and installation of three new rising busbars and associated new main supply submains cables. New submains cabling was also installed and a full LV metering system was installed to provide remote monitoring.

As main contractor on the project we were all responsible for builder’s works, fire stopping, asbestos cleaning and removal works. Despite numerous issues with logistics, all shutdowns and works were programmed and carried out in full liaison with the building users, to minimise any disruptions to the day-to-day running and operation of the building.

UCL Rubin Building Tavistock Square

Location:  UCL Rubin Building, Tavistock Square

Project value: £300,000

Summary of work:   

The Rubin Building houses UCL’s Department of Political Science / School of Public Policy and is located in Tavistock Square. Working as principal contractor, Alpine Works carried out the installation of emergency lighting and an addressable emergency lighting control system; the installation of power supplies, monitoring and testing of cables and equipment, including all final connections between all luminaires and the emergency lighting control system; and the installation of a new fully addressable fire alarm system installed throughout the building.

Existing emergency lighting was kept operable at all times during the installation, before stripping out on completion and the whole system was tested, commissioned and certified on completion.

All builder’s works and asbestos removal in connection with this installation also formed part of this project.

UCL Dept of History 16-26 Gordon Square

 

Location:  UCL Department of History, 16-26 Gordon Square

Project value: c.£107,000

Summary of work:   

Alpine Works were responsible on this project for lighting refurbishment of common parts (staircase and landings) and upgrades to the bathrooms.

Electrical services installed included main and sub-main low voltage switchgear; low voltage rising busbar system; low voltage distribution equipment; small power and lighting installation; the fire alarm system; earthing and bonding and builders’ work

UCL Langton Close Hall of residence

Location:  UCL Langton Close  Halls of residence

Project value: £93,000

Summary of work:   

This project consisted of installing new lighting to student accommodation on two floors, replacing the existing fittings and adding desk lights to the rooms. We installed new LED corridor lighting on both floors along with new LED emergency lighting which was incorporated into the addressable advanced emergency lighting system in the building. The corridor lighting was altered by installing new stand alone Ex-Or presence detectors. New lighting and emergency lighting was installed in the main staircase of Langton Close.

UCL Campbell House West

Location:  UCL Campbell House West, Taviton Street Halls of residence

Project value: £91,000

Summary of work:   

Campbell House West is a modernised Grade II listed building providing student accommodation only a few minutes’ walk from the main UCL campus. Alpine Works was contracted to install new lighting and emergency lighting to the student communal and stairwell areas. All the stairwell lighting was controlled by Exor presence detectors. New rear external emergency lighting was installed to cover all walkways.
